1. Fiendish by Brenna Yovanoff
I actually picked this one up expecting horror and was surprised to find that it isn't. I could've sword that I read somewhere that it was, but I guess I was confused. Instead, this is a really fantastic paranormal/fantasy novel that focuses on witchcraft, small town politics, and a potentially ill-fated romance. I really liked this one - look for it this August!
2. Broken Hearts, Fences, and Other Things to Mend by Katie Finn
I'd been meaning to read this one for awhile, but I moved it up on my reading list after hearing it compared to the television show Revenge. While it definitely has similarities to the show, it's not near as dark or intense, so don't worry, the cover isn't totally misleading. Though it was a bit predictable, I enjoyed this one and will read the next two books in the trilogy. This one is in stores now.
3. Anybody Shining by Frances O'Roark Dowell
Anybody Shining is a historically set MG that I absolutely adored. Set in the 1920s, the novel centers around 12-year old Arie Mae, a adventurous girl growing up in the Appalachian Mountains. The story is told, in part, through letters to her cousin (who has yet to respond to a single one) and explores themes of friendship, being true to oneself, and the importance of family and history. This one will be on shelves at the end of August.
4. Into the Grey by Celine Kiernan
From what I understand, this book is already out in Europe and is just now coming to the US. If you're looking for a ghost story that will leave you both frightened and introspective, this is it. Look for this one in August.
5. Boys Like You by Julianna Stone
I really thought I would love this one but... I just didn't. It felt cliche and, despite the premise, shallow. For some reason, I feel guilty about not liking this one, but I have to be honest about it. I just feel like, with so many other novels out there featuring similar plots, this one can be skipped. Out now.
6. The Violet Hour by Whitney A. Miller
I'm so happy I finally had a chance to read this one. I've been looking forward to it every since I saw the awesome book trailer and it totally lived up to my expectations! This is twisty YA paranormal horror with no small amount of gore. And there's a sequel - win!
7. How to Outrun a Crocodile When Your Shoes Are Untied by Jess Keating
Yay for funny MG! This is a fantastic story filled with animal facts and a great lesson about overcoming insecurity and believing in yourself. And it made me laugh out loud multiple times which is always a good sign. This one is out in June.
8. The Sound by Sarah Alderson
Brit heroine is nannying in the states for the summer, but things get crazy when she learns that foreign nannies are being attacked and killed by a potential serial killer. Check out my full review here and enter to win a copy here. In stores now.
