Guest Post with Cori McCarthy, author of You Were Here

Cori McCarthy visits The Hiding Spot today to celebrate the release of her newest YA novel, You Were Here, which is on shelves this week! One of my favorite things about this book, which follows a daredevil main character named Jaycee, is the hybrid format; text with graphic novel elements throughout. This book must be seen in person for you to fully appreciate it!

Check out six things Cori McCarthy has dared to do throughout the years, then enter to win a copy of You Were Here.

6. Get a lower back J.R.R. Tolkien tattoo. It’s not that strange. My brothers also have The Lord of the Rings tattoos.

5. Move to another country where I didn’t know a single person. I spent my junior year abroad in Dublin, Ireland. It was the best identity building experience of my life. Very freeing not to know anyone, you know?

4. Have a child and name him Maverick. Risky business, get it? Oh lord, I just dared to make a Tom Cruise joke. That’s terrible. That should totally be on the dare list. At least I didn’t jump on a couch. Oh crap…I did it again!

If I knew how, I'd totally put Cori's face over Tom Cruises's... alas.

3. Wandered through The Ridges abandoned insane asylum at Ohio University all by myself. I saw and felt such things that I had to put them in You Were Here.

The Ridges at Ohio University.
 2. I have a huge jaw, and I was dared to put a billiards ball in my mouth in high school. This was a terrible, terrible idea. Don’t do it. Not ever.

1. Write honest books. Writing remains the hardest, scariest, most beautiful, most painful, most rewarding experience. It has both saved me thousands in therapy and cost me millions in worn-out pajamas.

Grief turned Jaycee into a daredevil, but can she dare to deal with her past?

On the anniversary of her daredevil brother's death, Jaycee attempts to break into Jake's favorite hideout—the petrifying ruins of an insane asylum. Joined by four classmates, each with their own brand of dysfunction, Jaycee discovers a map detailing her brother's exploration and the unfinished dares he left behind.

As a tribute to Jake, Jaycee vows to complete the dares, no matter how terrifying or dangerous. What she doesn't bargain on is her eccentric band of friends who challenge her to do the unthinkable: reveal the parts of herself that she buried with her brother.
